چکیده

The growth factors required by Lactobacillus arabinosus 17-5 have been studied extensively by Snell and Wright (I), Isbell (2), and Lewis (3). Investigation of the nitrogen requirement has been limited. Hydrolyzed casein has been found to supply the essential nitrogen when supplemented with tryptophane and cystine. Glutamic acid has been found essential (4), and quantitative levels have been determined. Recently, the amino acids essential for the growth of Lactobacillus casei (5) have been determined qualitatively. The present investigation of the nitrogen requirements of Lactobacillus arabinosus has led to the discovery of the several amino acids necessary for the growth of this bacterium.

THE ROLE OF VITAMIN B,j IN THE SYNTHESIS OF TRYP- TOPHANE FROM INDOLE AND ANTHRANILIC ACID BY LACTOBACILLUS ARABINOSUS”

Lactobacillus arabinosus has the ability to synthesize several amino acids when adequate quantities of vitamin Bg are included in the medium (1, 2) ; however, the requirement of this organism for tryptophane is apparently not affected by the addition of vitamin 136 (2). Earlier studies showed that indole and anthranilic acid have appreciable tryptophane activity for L. arabinosus (3-7) but not ...

Investigations of amino acids, peptides, and proteins; the determination of phenylalanine in protein hydrolysates with Leuconostoc mesenteroides P-60 and Lactobacillus casei.

During the past 2 years microbiological procedures’ have been reported for the determination in proteins of thirteen of the twenty-one amino acids which occur in protein materials. Seven amino acids (isoleucine, glutamic acid, methionine, leucine, phenylalanine, tryptophane, and valine) have been determined with Lactobacillus arabinosus 17-5, three (arginine, tyrosine, and valine) with Lactobac...

Isoglutamine and the growth of Lactobacillus arabinosus.

The esential role of -glutamine in microbial nutrition and metabolism has been well established (Waelsch, 1952). Recently Ayengar et al. (1951) have described in detail the stimulating effect of the amide on the utilization of i-glutamic acid by Lactobacillus arabinosus. However, almost no published data exist which deal with the influence of iisoglutamine on bacterial growth. We wish to descri...

The Microbiological Determination of Amino Acids

After the development of methods for the determination of valine, leucine, and isoleucine (1) with LactobacilEus arabinosus 17-5 as the test organism, it was assumed that other amino acids essential for the growth of this organism could be determined by about the same procedure. However, it was soon discovered that glutamic acid is unique in its relationship to the growth of Lactobacillus arabi...
